How to Post a Full Photo on Instagram Without Cropping
Updated
You pick a great group photo for Instagram, and the app cuts off the people at either end. It happens because Instagram's posts allow a limited range of shapes. Here is how to share the whole picture.
Why photos get cropped
Instagram posts have to fall within a limited range of shapes. Anything wider or taller than that has to be cropped, or fitted with extra space around it. Stories and profile pictures have their own shapes, too. Note that Instagram can change these rules, so check the preview in the app before you post.
The fix: put your photo on a canvas
Rather than cutting your picture to fit, shrink it to fit inside a shape that Instagram accepts, then fill the empty space around it. Nothing is lost, and nothing is stretched.
- Open Instagram no crop and upload your photo.
- Choose Post, best fit, or pick a specific shape.
- Check the preview, then download the image.
- Post it on Instagram as usual. It should fit without cropping.
Which shape to pick
| Your photo | Good choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wide landscape | Post, best fit | Keeps the picture as large as possible |
| Tall screenshot | Story, or Portrait post | Uses the height of the phone screen |
| Grid with a consistent look | Square post | All your posts match |
| A selfie or headshot | Portrait post | Takes up more room in the feed |
How to fit your full photo in your DP
Your profile picture is displayed as a small circle, which removes the corners of any image. Choose Profile DP, and your photo is set to fit the square without being stretched. Quieter areas stretch to fill any extra space. The circle still hides the far corners when Instagram displays it, so keep faces near the middle.
Keeping your photo sharp
- Start from the original, not a copy sent through a chat app.
- Use a good connection when you post, as a poor one may lead to a lower-quality upload.
- Check Instagram's media quality setting so that it uses the highest quality available.
- If your photo is in HEIC, upload it directly, or use HEIC to JPG to make a JPG copy.
Posting a PDF or flyer
Instagram doesn't accept PDFs. Convert the page with PDF to JPG first, and then fit the image on a canvas using the same tool.
