iPhones save photos as HEIC by default, and many Windows PCs, Android phones and websites can't open them. Convert your photos here to get standard JPG files.
How to use the HEIC to JPG Converter
- Upload your HEIC or HEIF photo.
- Press JPG to convert it.
- Save the JPG to your device.
What to expect
Opens everywhere
A JPG works on Windows, Android and almost every upload form.
No app to install
There is no codec or software to add, as everything runs through your browser.
Keeps photos looking good
Images are saved as high-quality JPG files. Expect a larger file than the HEIC.
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the photo format iPhones have used by default since iOS 11. It stores good-quality photos in smaller files than JPG, which saves space on your phone. The catch is compatibility. Older Windows PCs, some Android phones, many websites and a lot of printing services can't open it.
- Sending iPhone photos to someone using Windows or Android.
- Uploading a picture to a government or job application form.
- Printing photos at a shop or through an online service.
- Editing in software that doesn't support HEIC.
HEIC and JPG compared
| HEIC | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Smaller | Larger |
| Color depth | Up to 10-bit and above | 8-bit |
| Compatibility | Limited | Almost universal |
| Best for | Storing photos on an iPhone | Sharing photos anywhere |
What you get
Your photo is saved as a JPG at quality 95 with full color detail, at its original width and height. It is rotated using the orientation your phone recorded, so it appears the right way up. Expect the JPG to be larger than the HEIC, because JPG compresses less efficiently. A batch of photos downloads as one ZIP file.
Stop your iPhone from making HEIC files
If you would rather always have JPG, open Settings on your iPhone, go to Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG, though they will take up more storage. Your existing photos won't change, so those can still be converted here. Our guide on opening HEIC photos on Windows and Android covers the other options.
What else you can do with your photos
Need your photos in one document? Image to PDF accepts HEIC directly. To post a whole photo without cropping, use Instagram no crop. For formats other than JPG, use the image converter.
If your conversion doesn't look right
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| An error when converting | The file is damaged or incomplete | Transfer the photo again from your iPhone |
| A ZIP instead of a photo | You uploaded several photos | Open the ZIP to find all your JPGs |
| A large JPG | JPG is less efficient than HEIC | That is normal. Crop the photo if you need it smaller |
| Colors look a little different | JPG has a narrower color range than some HEIC photos | Keep your HEIC original for the best version |
Getting photos off your iPhone
- Using this site on your iPhone Choose your photos when you upload, then save the result to Files.
- With a cable to a Windows PC Photos can be copied from the Internal Storage folder.
- With iCloud Download the originals from icloud.com, then upload them here.
- With email or chat Some apps convert or shrink photos automatically, so send them as documents if you want to keep the original quality.
Keep your originals
A JPG copy is great for sharing, but it is worth keeping your HEIC photos too. They take up less space, and they can hold more color information. Think of the JPG as the version you send to other people, and the HEIC as your master copy.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I open HEIC on Windows?
Windows may need an extra codec to read HEIC. Converting to JPG avoids that.
How do I convert iPhone photos to JPG?
Upload the HEIC file and press JPG. The converted photo downloads automatically.
Why is the JPG bigger?
HEIC compresses more efficiently than JPG, so the same photo usually takes more space as a JPG.
Are my photos kept private?
Your files are only used for the conversion and are deleted from the server afterwards.
Is HEIC better than JPG?
It is more efficient, so it stores similar quality in less space. JPG is far more compatible, which is why people convert.
Will I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?
There is a very small loss, as JPG is lossy, but at quality 95 it is very hard to see.
Can I convert many iPhone photos at once?
Yes. Select them all, up to 200 MB in total, and you get a ZIP file of JPGs.
What about Live Photos?
You get a still JPG. The motion part isn't included.
