Need to change a contract, fix a typo in a report or reuse text from a PDF? Upload the file and get an editable Word document back, ready to open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.
How to use the PDF to Word Converter
- Upload your PDF, or drag it onto the page.
- Press Word to start the conversion.
- Your DOCX downloads to your device, ready to edit.
What to expect
Keeps your layout
Paragraphs, tables and images are rebuilt as real Word content, so you can edit them directly rather than working around pictures of text.
Works best on digital PDFs
PDFs exported from Word, Excel or a website convert best. A scanned page is a photo with no text inside, so this tool can't make its words editable.
No account or watermark
There is nothing to install and no sign-up, and nothing is stamped on your document.
When converting a PDF to Word makes sense
A PDF is designed to look the same everywhere, which is also why it is awkward to change. Converting it to DOCX gives you back a document you can work on. If you only need to read or share a file, leave it as a PDF. If you need to change what it says, this is the tool to use.
- Updating an old CV when you no longer have the original Word file.
- Correcting a figure, name or date in a report or contract draft.
- Reusing paragraphs and tables from a document without retyping them.
- Adding tracked changes or comments for someone to review in Word.
What converts well, and what needs a second look
Results depend on how the PDF was made. PDFs store the position of each piece of text rather than paragraphs and tables, so the converter has to work out the structure. Here is what you can expect from each part of a document.
| Part of the PDF | What you get in Word |
|---|---|
| Normal text | Editable paragraphs, usually with the original fonts and sizes where they are available |
| Tables | Word tables you can edit. Check merged cells and tables that run across pages |
| Images and logos | Pictures placed in the document, which you can move or replace |
| Columns and text boxes | Usually kept, though complex designs may need small adjustments |
| Scanned pages | Remain images, because there is no text inside them to edit |
| Password-protected files | Can't be opened. Remove the password with the PDF's owner first |
Tips for a cleaner Word file
Our guide on converting a PDF to Word without losing formatting goes through each of these in more detail.
- Start from the original digital PDF rather than a scan or a photo of a printout.
- Install any unusual fonts the document uses, or Word will show a substitute.
- Check page breaks first, as they are the most common thing to shift.
- Turn on formatting marks in Word to spot stray spacing and fix it quickly.
- Save your edited file as a new PDF with our Word to PDF converter when you are done.
Is your PDF digital or scanned?
Try selecting a sentence in your PDF viewer. If you can highlight individual words, the PDF has real text and should convert well. If the whole page gets selected like a picture, it is a scan. This tool doesn't run OCR, so a scanned page will arrive in Word as an image. To search or copy the words from a scan, use OCR PDF. We explain how to tell the two apart in scanned vs digital PDFs.
Other formats you may need instead
If your PDF is mostly numbers, PDF to Excel puts them straight into cells. To present the pages, try PDF to PowerPoint. For a picture of each page, use PDF to JPG. You can browse everything on the PDF tools page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PDF to Word for free?
Upload the PDF on this page and press Word. The DOCX file downloads when it is ready. There is no sign-up or payment.
Can I edit the Word file afterwards?
Yes. The result is a normal DOCX file you can edit in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.
Will it work on a scanned PDF?
Scanned pages have no text layer, and this tool doesn't do OCR, so the words won't become editable. To search or copy from a scan, use OCR PDF. Digital PDFs give the best results.
Is it safe to upload my PDF?
Your files are only used for the conversion and are deleted from the server afterwards.
Can I convert several PDFs at once?
Yes. Select more than one file when you upload, and you get a ZIP file containing a Word document for each one.
What is the file size limit?
You can upload up to 200 MB at a time.
Will my document have a watermark?
No. Nothing is added to your document, and there is no sign-up.
Why does my Word file look slightly different?
PDFs don't store paragraphs or tables as such, so the structure has to be rebuilt, and missing fonts get replaced. Small layout changes can happen, especially in complex designs.
