How to Reduce a Photo's Size for Online Forms
Updated
Application forms often reject phone photos for being too big. A phone photo can be several megabytes, while the form may want 100 KB or less. Two simple steps usually fix this.
Read the form's rules first
| The form says | What it means | Tool |
|---|---|---|
| Under 100 KB | File size | Compress Image |
| 600 x 600 pixels | Width and height | Resize Image |
| Square, or passport shape | The photo's shape | Crop Image |
| JPG only | File format | Image Converter |
Step 1: crop to the right shape
Use Crop Image first, if the form asks for a certain shape. For a portrait, keep your head and shoulders in the frame.
Step 2: resize
This is the step people miss. Open Resize Image and type a width, or the exact size the form gives. If it gives no size, around 800 pixels wide is usually enough to look clear on a form, and it cuts the file size a lot.
Step 3: compress
Upload the resized photo to Compress Image and choose Balanced. The page shows the new size. If it's still too big, go back to your resized photo and choose Smallest file. For a very small limit such as 50 KB, make it narrower first, at around 400 to 500 pixels.
If the form still rejects it
- Check the format. Some forms only accept JPG, so convert it if needed.
- Check for a minimum size, as some forms also reject very small files.
- Rename the file using simple letters and numbers.
- Try another browser, as some government sites work better on a computer.
