A PDF looks the same on every phone and computer, which makes it the safe format for CVs, assignments and invoices. Upload a Word document and get a PDF that is ready to send or print.
How to use the Word to PDF Converter
- Upload your DOC or DOCX file.
- Press PDF to convert it.
- Save the finished PDF to your device.
What to expect
Ready to share
Whoever opens the file sees the pages as you laid them out, without needing Word installed.
Old and new Word files
Both the modern DOCX format and the older DOC format are accepted.
Check unusual fonts
Common fonts convert cleanly. If a document uses a rare font, look over the result, as a similar font may be used instead.
Why send a PDF instead of a Word file
A Word document can look different depending on the version of Word and the fonts on the other person's device. Headings can move and pages can break in new places. A PDF fixes the layout, so what you see is what they see.
- CVs and job applications, where the layout should stay tidy.
- Assignments and theses that have to be submitted as a PDF.
- Invoices, quotes and letters that shouldn't be edited by accident.
- Forms and notices that need to be printed the same way each time.
DOC and DOCX: what's the difference?
| Format | What it is | Works here? |
|---|---|---|
| DOCX | The current Word format, used since Word 2007 | Yes |
| DOC | The older format from Word 97 to 2003 | Yes |
| A fixed-layout format for sharing and printing | The result |
Get the best result from your document
If you later need to change something and have lost the original file, you can go back with PDF to Word.
- Stick to common fonts where you can. Rare fonts may be swapped for a similar one.
- Use Word's own heading styles and page breaks rather than rows of blank lines.
- Accept or reject tracked changes first, so that the PDF shows your final text.
- Open the finished PDF and check the page count before you send it.
Converting on a phone or a shared computer
You don't need Word installed, because the conversion runs on our server. That makes it handy on a phone, a library computer or a laptop without Office. Pick the file, press PDF, and the result lands in your downloads.
Working with other Office files
Spreadsheets and slides have their own converters: Excel to PDF and PowerPoint to PDF. If you have pictures rather than documents, Image to PDF combines them into a single file. All of these are listed on the PDF tools page.
If your PDF doesn't look right
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A different font | The server doesn't have your font | Switch to a common font like Arial or Calibri |
| An extra blank page | Empty lines or a page break at the end | Delete them in Word and convert again |
| Images in the wrong place | Floating images moved with the text | Set the image to In Line with Text in Word |
| Tracked changes showing | Edits haven't been accepted yet | Accept all changes and remove comments first |
| An error when converting | A damaged or protected file | Remove the password, or save a fresh copy, and try again |
Sending a CV or application as a PDF
Employers and application systems often prefer PDFs, because the layout stays put on any screen. Before sending yours, give the file a clear name such as your name followed by CV, rather than something like final-version-3. Check that the text can still be selected in the PDF. That is a good sign that software scanning your application will be able to read it. Also check any limit on file size, especially if your document has large photos.
A quick check before you send any PDF
- Is the page count what you expected?
- Are the headings still on the same pages as the text that follows them?
- Do tables fit within the page margins?
- Is the name on the file clear to the person receiving it?
Frequently asked questions
How do I change a Word document to PDF?
Upload the file here and press PDF. The converted file downloads automatically, with no account needed.
Does it work with DOC as well as DOCX?
Yes, both formats are supported.
Can I convert Word to PDF on my phone?
Yes. The site works in a mobile browser, so you can upload from your phone without installing an app.
What happens to my document?
Your files are only used for the conversion and are deleted from the server afterwards.
Will my Word layout change?
Most documents keep their layout. The usual cause of a change is a font that isn't available on the server, so check documents that use unusual fonts.
Can I convert several Word files at once?
Yes. Select several files and you get a ZIP containing one PDF for each document.
Do links stay clickable in the PDF?
Open the PDF and test any links that matter, as this can depend on how they were added in the document.
Is there a watermark or page limit?
There is no watermark. The limit is 200 MB per upload rather than a number of pages.
